looking for an above-average news site

Could you recommend a Spanish-language web-site offering in-depth news, or (even better) essays on various topics ???

I sync my Palm with BBC Mundo, but I find nothing to read there. I guess something similar to WaPo or NYT would be fine. As for essays and varia, I think http://www.aldaily.com/ is very good (but it's in English :)). Is there anything like that in Spanish???

The Google news site is pretty remarkable. http://news.google.com/

You can set it up to pick up Spanish news in Spanish or whatever and it pulls feeds from all sorts of newspapers, websites and news agencies. Nearly every time the story is repeated from a variety of sources so you can choose your bias - take your news about ETA from ABC, El Pais, 20 Minutos or Gara.

Google News - yes - as a mega-source for the news. But I am mostly looking for a good Spanish and a familiar context (i. e. news I got from English sources before).
Well, I plan to learn more about Spain gradually, too (I wasn't 100% sure what ETA means ... had to check :cool:)

You might want to check menéame (http://meneame.net/), it's the Spanish version of Digg (that is, links to news and articles in other sites, posted and commented by the community).

I see they have "sitios más votados", and www.elpais.com actually leads there. For news in English I do use lots of sources, but here I need to settle on a few good ones and start reading ... :reader:

El País (http://www.elpais.com/) and El Mundo (http://www.elmundo.es/) are both pretty good. Check on the house bloggers and you'll often find interesting stuff.

Those are general news sites, if you want something more specific you may try be looking for something else : f.i. for economic press I like Expansión (http://http://www.expansion.com/), Bolsa Cinco (http://www.bolsacinco.com/), and Invertia (http://www.invertia.com/)... If your interests lay somewhere else (sports, literature, music, travel) you'll be able to find some resources focused on those topics too.

For magazines etc listed by type, this one (http://www.world-newspapers.com/spain.html), although some may be subscription there is usually enough to gibe you an idea of what they are about.

cafe babel is a 'translator site' and so most articles are avalaiable in english, spanish, french, etc, so you can read in spanish and check in english..its really helpful

20minutos is like el pais, but easier to digest- as its a bit simpler, but still very good for vocab, and the videos are good for listening skills

Thank you, cafebabel looks very good. So far I am reading bits from elpais.com and 20minutes - mostly columnists or blogs. Blog comments are fun too - though the language may be quite un-orthodox :-)

news are not inspiring :) and not that useful to learn a language - I am looking for some really witty columnist writing in Spanish, on topics of general interest. So far, I have bookmarked only C A Montaner; and his site is multi-lingual, too.

Umm. You're right I can't find the exact same copy in spanish. I tend to use it to get an idea of what's about in the news to gain an advantage when looking at the full spanish edition. It gives me a headstart.
