Wife & self going to Tenerife at end of March - just for a week. If we go on separate excursions, then rather than use our UK mobile sims which are v. expensive if used abroad to call each other, we are thinking of getting Spanish ones. Looking on the Internet, they all seem to have a significant up front charge compared with UK (where you can often get them for less than £ 5), even if "free" minutes are included. Most also seem to cancel any credit if not used every few months. They are only likely to be used lightly.
Anyone know what the current best deals are? Anyone used Lebara mobil?
And does one have to look for specialist shops to purchase or do the supermarkets do them as here?
Any advice welcome

Buy an Orange SIM here in Spain/Tenerife at any Orange shop at 20€ and this includes 15 euros of call in Spain. Also buy a 5€ International calling card from Orange for use with the SIM and that gives you 150 mins of calls to UK just by dialling 273 then chose 2 for English and away you go

Just curious. Would this Orange SIM allow me to use 2G or 3G internet access? I want to be able to surf for information on my smart phone while in Spain and I'm a bit confused by the phone company websites. I hope somebody has any info about this. Thanks in advance.

Do you know if you can use this phone to send/receive calls from the US?

You will get all services that you would with a contract. The prices vary quite a bit though, see this page (http://tiendamovil.orange.es/moviles-Nuevas%20SIMS.htm?utm_source=orange&utm_medium=autopromo&utm_term=tienda&utm_campaign=movil) for latest Orange offerings. If you are only using it for one trip just let the number lapse when you leave, which it will if you don't use it after 3 months or so, then buy another next trip.
There are also phone shops that can offer you a choice of operator/SIM depending on your projected useage - they'll also sell calling cards allowing you to make cheap calls abroad. These work from landlines as well and you'll get about 5 times as many minutes for your buck.
They may need personal details as there are new rules regarding registering these type of SIM from early November. Any not registered by then will cease working. (anti-terrorist/criminal rules they tell us )
