There some really clever people here, so I just know you can gve me the answer to this.

I use yahoo for most of my e-mails. Running yahoo on my own computer with Firefox I have no problems, but on my work computer, which has IE it refuses to let me send attachments with my mails. It keeps telling me my file type is not recognised. Yet I am only wanting to send PDFs and JPGs!
It happily receives attachments of any kind.

Am I missing a setting somewhere. It used to work, but for the past month it's been a right PITA.

Richard,

Definitely a weird one. Have you tried zipping up the attachments before sending them to see what happens? Do you have a popup blocker that's possibly preventing the upload? Does Yahoo use a weird ActiveX plugin to upload the attachment that IE might be blocking? (I think that it does, like a Norton Antivirus attachment scan). Are you using IE7?

Not sure about the popup blocker, but that would surely block attachments both ways if it had an effect, but attachment come with no probs. I am using IE 6. I tried 7 once and it caused lots of problems, so went back to 6.

Why zip? I've even tried to send a one sentence word file, (seriously small) and it refused that too.

It's possible that your security settings in IE6 are set too high. You could try resetting IE security by clicking on "Restore Defaults" on the Advanced tab.

A zip because it's a different file type.

Is it networked and has your network admin blocked uploads?

Good thought.

Your antivirus might also not like the upload. Try disabling the autoprotect while trying to upload it.

Gary, no. Work computer and my own computer are on the same network. My home is twenty yards from where I work.(Remote desert location.)

A simple answer would be to use Firefox on your work comp. If you're not able to install it for work reasons, take a look at the "Portable Apps" on http://www.notesfromspain.com/forums/showthread.php?t=682 .

Alan,

True and I probably will. Having the two coputers so close means it's not really a huge bother. But I just want to understand why something that worked, now doesn't. Incidentally, I've reset IE back to default settings and it's still the same. The only thing I can think of is that at sometime I have loaded in the lastest uSoft updates and they have caused the problem.

You could also check for Browser toolbars and helper objects. Disable any extra ones- they could be causing the issue.

I went ahead and tried this with both IE and Firefox. I didn't have any issues (couldn't even force any), so I'd suspect something having gone awry with your IE settings. What version of IE are you using? Do you have Custom security levels set on your zones (ie, Trusted Sites, Internet, etc.)? Mine are set to Custom and I didn't set them that way, so an update might have done it. In any case, you might try setting the security level back to one of the defaults.

Also, try restoring your Advanced settings to defaults (internet options --> Advanced tab --> Restore Defaults button)

Another option might be to run something like CCleaner (www.ccleaner.com) to try and clean out some of the cruft that seems to build up when using MS apps.

Otherwise, do what I do: Use Firefox (more than you already are, anyway). Rather than bang my head against the wall, I use Firefox. I do have an odd lock-up here or there, usually when I leave a ton of tabs open over the course of several days, but it tends to let me get on with browsing the big, bad interweb without getting in my way.

And I like that. :)

Good luck.
