View Full Version : Ideas for Sevilla

I have booked a short trip to Sevilla, 4-6 October. Careful planning got it down to about £120 (less than $230) including flights, airport parking, a room in a pension and transfers. I want to make the most of the days both linguistically and of course to see the fine city. I am a beginner/intermediate learner and I will be travelling alone.
Any ideas welcome?

Thanks

Alan

If you can spare a morning, jump on the AVE for the half hour train ride to Cordoba - the Cordoba mosque is one of the most beautiful, mesmerising places on earth.

In Seville itself, the bullring tour is actually quite interesting...

If you are going to be there only for 2 days I think it would be too much to fit a trip to Cordoba (sorry Ben;)) I would enjoy Seville as it has too much to see, lovely streets to wonder around and lovely food to be tasted.

You can check Antonluque post about restaurants in Seville in the following thread. (http://www.notesfromspain.com/forums/showthread.php?t=51)

Hi...

Just a brief note to offer advice on Sevilla. We have been here for 3 days now and leave tomorrow for Huelva. Its been fantastic!

Tips for those that follow...

Los "must do" monumentos ....
La catedral y la Giralda - free on Mondays
- La torre del Oro - free on tuesdays
- Plaza Espana - always free
Tke some EEC ID with you (photocopy of pasport) and most other monuments are free.

El Flamenco....
Casa de Carmen (14 euros and superb)- Marques de Paradas)
Casa de la memoria... dont know but going tonite!

La Cuidad....
always busy, lots of roadworks, avoid driving if possible, people friendly and never felt threatened at all...

En resumen - una cuidad maravillosa con una historia fascinante !!

Thanks Guys

I will need to plan carefully to fit it all in! Please let me know how you got on at the casa de la memoria Tony as this was on my list and I doubt that I'll have time for 2 flamenco experiences this trip.

Dear all!
I hope to come on 07/10/06 to Spain and will stay at the sea side near to Barcelona. But all my deams are about visiting Andalucia the motherland of flamenco which i learn and love so much.
How is possible to see most interesting places by myself (if i come there from Barcelona by train for example)?

Thanks a lot for any information.

Thanks to all for the excellent advice. I managed to see quite a bit of Sevilla and most enjoyed walking in the gardens of the Alcazar, flamenco (casa de memoria) excellent tapas, the bullring museum which was more interesting than I had thought it would be, and Triana which was earthy and more authentic than some of the tourist areas. The weather was good, sunny and 30 and I felt quite safe although I did witness a firecracker/bag snatching by motorcycle thieves.

What sort of state is the city in, someone told me it was full of works for the new metro?

yes, that was a problem but more if you drive than walk - a bit dusty here and there and occasional detours around barriers but everything was open, and there were some archeological digs to view as a result and the removal of human bones!

Simplemente para aclarar una duda, ¿debería ser, me encantó o me encanta, en vez de me encanto?

Simplemente para aclarar una duda, ¿debería ser, me encantó o me encanta, en vez de me encanto?

In my opinion:confused:

If you are talking in general about something that you like you can say:

Me gusta ('gusta' being the 3rd person singular, not 1st)

or if you really like it:

Me encanta

If you are talking about a place you visited in the "past", for example, I would say :

Me gustó

Me encantó sounds a bit odd.

Hope this helps

I'm really querying the grammar of it. I don't believe, "me encanto" makes sense here. (the verb is not reflexive) Whereas "me encanta" (I love it) or "me encantó" (I loved it) seemed to be what he was saying.

Me encantó sounds a bit odd.

Sounds fine to me. ;-) Do a google search for it and you'll come up with thousands of examples.

Hola John..

No estoy de acuerdo contigo ....

I know the grammar is a bit odd with gustar and encantar ... they are not reflexive and are used in the third person form .... gusto and encanto are singular and past tense...

Me gusto la chica ..... I liked the chick .... it (she) gave me pleasure ...ja ja :o

Me encanto la obra ........ I loved (thoroughly enjoyed) the play

(sorry the accents are missing from the "o's" but I havent sussed the keyboard out yet) .......... hope this helps

hasta luego amigo

¡Estamos de acuerdo! :)
If you have an English keyboard, I find the easiest way is to set up a Spanish keyboard as well.
Go to Start, Control Panel, Regional and Language Options. Then click on Languages, Details, and add Spanish. Once installed, you can then simply switch from English to Spanish keyboard by pressing alt and shift. Sounds complicated, but it isn´t, and is so easy to switch from one to the other.
I used to use the alt164 etc, but that´s quite labour intensive! :) When I first did this, I cut out a Spanish keyboard (you can find them on the net) and put it somewhere prominent until I learnt the layout.

Not sure how Tony, but you seem to have some French accents there, they´re going the wrong way!;) You want to press the ' first (the one with the arroba @) and then the vowel.

Gracias Frank...

yo comprendo ahora y usaré el acento correcto en el futuro

We saw the show there last month and it was one of the highlights of our trip.
Buy your tickets early as they do sell out. And line up early too at about 8 pm for good seats (front and center).

I should have pointed that out. The 1st time my wife and I were there, we arrived in plenty of time and got great seats. This past summer, we arrived about a half hour early and ended up in the second row in the corner. I didn't get one good photo. Oh well, it was a great show regardless.

BTW, to any shutterbugs considering this venue: video is forbidden and photos are only allowed during the last 5 (maybe 10, I forget) minutes of the performance.

Sevilla at the moment is very dirty and noisy around the central area due to all the work being done for the new metro system. Still worth visiting but I think I'll go again in a few years and see it at its best.:)
