The industry used the number of megapixels as a marketing tool to sell stuff to Mr Normal who will happily buy the better spec believing that it is 'better' for him. Same is true I reckon of audio and the bandwidth ( or is it dynamic range) of amps/speakers etc. Numbers quoted by saleamen to upsell us into buying pixells and hertz we can't appreciate either because the output device we use cant handle them or in the case of audio the extra frequencies are only audible by dogs.

for the pros that need to blow their images up to the size of buildings there is a clear need for high spec, for those of us that keep our images digitally or as printed snaps good enough is good enough, and thats a personal taste issue - folk that crow bout hi def TV are just as happy viewing youtube vids - it depends on the circumstances in which they are viewed.

Having done work withinn schools Hard drives fill up waaay quicker at 12 megapixels than they do at 3 and printing an image the size of a billboard in a Word document has caused more than a few logjams, notwithstanding when someone obliviously trys to email said word doc as a massive attachment.....

De acuerdo basta...

In the past I have always heard the quote that 11-12 MP is getting close to film.

But really what matters now is the the metering that is done. And that is what really makes the high end SLRs would it.

That alone would warrant the modest cost.
