Time for another photo quiz, this time from the whole of Spain. It can be a collaborative effort, try to answer one per post, and let's see how long it takes to get all ten correct answers!

So, here goes:

1. Where is this street, one of my favourites in the world, and what is it called?

http://www.notesfromspain.com/wp-content/quiz/q8.jpg

2. The header image for the NFS and NIS websites was taken during the annual feria of a town in Andalucia, famous for its horse races. Name the town, and say when and where the horse races take place (the answer is on the blog ;) ). For a bonus point, what drink is the feria (earlier in the year) focused around?

http://www.notesfromspain.com/wp-content/quiz/q1.jpg

3. What is the name of this rich bean stew, that we ate in Gijon?

http://www.notesfromspain.com/wp-content/quiz/q2.jpg

4. A town square not far from Madrid. What is the town called, and what fiery liquor do they distill here?

http://www.notesfromspain.com/wp-content/quiz/q3.jpg

5. Name this wild national park, where Green Peace recently successfully campaigned to have a hotel razed to the ground.

http://www.notesfromspain.com/wp-content/quiz/q4.jpg

6. Whose house is this, and where is it? Think 'crazy dreams'...

http://www.notesfromspain.com/wp-content/quiz/q5.jpg

7. The wall of a bar in the city in the photo. Name the city and the river.

http://www.notesfromspain.com/wp-content/quiz/q6.jpg

8. These famous city walls still stand (I'm standing on them when I take this photo!). A remarkable Teresa once lived here. Where am I, and who was Teresa?

http://www.notesfromspain.com/wp-content/quiz/q7.jpg

9. This wonderful sun dial adorns a building in the barrio of Madrid famous for its Sunday flea market. Name the market, and the barrio.

http://www.notesfromspain.com/wp-content/quiz/q9.jpg

10. This photo was taken at the end of a trek through this remarkable gorge in the north of Spain. Name the gorge, and the mountain range.

I believe I could answer six of the above ten questions.

Theses would be the pictures numbered :
2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 10

A por ello! The idea is to answer the ones we can, and together reach all ten. But maybe we should have a rule: if you are Spanish or have lived here for years, you can only answer 3 for now, what do you think? To give us guiris a chance! (Are you Spanish!?)

Yes I am Spanish (maybe I should've introduced myself first in the 'welcome sticky thread') that's why I didn't want to give such a quick bullying response and spoil the game for you all.

Anyway, "I think I know", but I do not rule out being wrong, and I still don´t know as many as 4 out of the 10 questions.

If I may, I'll start the game giving only one answer (to picture numer ten) wich is, if I'm not wrong, the River Cares Trek "Ruta del Cares in Spanish" within the Picos de Europa mountain range, in between the northern regions of Cantabria and Asturias.

¡Correcto! Thanks for being nice enough just to answer one for now, I'm sure we may need your help later on with some others :)

I've changed the 'rules' now at the top too, as it will be more fun if we try to answer one each for now...

I think number one is in Granada. There's a street called something like El paseo de los tristes and I think they used to bring the local dead bodies down it for funerals. Am I a million miles off the mark? :)

Ben

Bingo on the city! But cold on the name of the street...

Damn, thought I was on a winner with that one :)

I'll have to look at my pics of Granada when I get home tonight, if no-one's guessed it by then, and see if it jogs my memory.

Is no 8 Ávila? Saint Teresa was there (was she born there?), and supposedly her finger is still held there as one of those sacred relics.
If it is Ávila and you should have the good fortune to visit, you must try the Yemas de Ávila, or Yemas de Santa Teresa - they're egg yolks somehow infused with so much sugar you'll be high all evening. There's also a convento (sorry can't remember the name) with 3 cloisters, one of which houses a far-Eastern museum.

If I'm wrong, well Ávila's still a nice place to visit.

No! Sorry ... see below...

1. Paseo de los Tristes en Granada near La Alhambra?

It is below the Alhambra, but the street has a different name. Hint: it's named after the stream it runs along....

Ahh, now I know! But, I had to cheat and look at a map, so I will wait to see if anyone else can guess. It has a beautiful view of la Alhambra on one side and lots of little shops and restaurants on the other. But, watch out for the taxis and buses taking tourists up the hill because the street is very narrow!

Is the 4th picture from Sanlucar de Barrameda?? If that's the case the horse races take place on the beach and they drink vino fino or manzanilla...

By the way, the 5th picture is from Cabo de Gata-Nijar ;)

Based on your clue, I'd have to say that #2 is at the Feria in Sanlucar de Barrameda. It would seem that the drink that they would celebrate would be manzanilla which is a great sherry for drinking while you're sitting near the beach.

The horse race is on the beach. I'd never heard of it before, but that sounds like it would be pretty cool along that beach.

BTW, this contest reminds me of a flickr game we have in here in San Francisco called "Guess Where SF." I'm completely addicted to it (but not very good at it). :-) http://flickr.com/groups/guesswheresf/ - It originally started in NYC

Correcto, but do you mean the 2nd for the horses?

Spot on! The Feria de Manzanilla is a very dangerous affair - something like 250,000 bottles of sherry are drunk in one week!

5. Cabo de Gato (Almeria)

I believe the natural park in Almería is called "Cabo de Gata". GatA, not gatO.

I don´t know if there is another cape in Almería named Gato, or if both names are of common use for the same place.

Anyone can help with clarifying this reservation I have??

Ben
18th September 2006, 03:13 PM
You are quite right, it is the Cabo de Gata! I have changed it above. I'm not sure if there is also a Cabo de Gato...

antonluque
19th September 2006, 12:27 AM
Actually the proper name is "Cabo de Gata", and the ancient name was "Cabo de las Agatas"...

An agata is a kind of gem, and it was said that the colour of the water in that place was like the colour of those gems...
