Any recommendations for a Madrid hotel/good quality hostal in central Madrid for a couple of nights in October?
[Hostal los Alpes seems not to have any vacancies.:(]
Thanks

As has been mentioned billions of times on various threads there are good hostals around Plaza Santa Cruz; Hostal Santa Cruz, Hostal Cruz Sol, La Perla Asturiana, Hostal Tijcal, Hostal Persal. :thumbs-up:

Hotel Santander, you can get good value if you book early in the internet.
Don´t like el hostal Persal, although I stayed a long time ago, probably before they have modernized it, but you could hear anything from the rooms around you.

The Hostal Astoria has recently refurbished its rooms (although they're not that big) and it's very central:

(Don't confuse it with the Hotel Asturias across the road)

Hotel Ibis have a nice new place on Calle de Manuela Malasaña, close to Metro Bilbao. Good for those of you (like me) who prefer to avoid staying near Sol when in Madrid.

We stayed at Hostal Santa Cruz- central, clean, comfortable, noisy at night with trucks replenishing bars and restaurants in Plaza Mayor. Mildly expensive (45 euros single, 58 euors double). OK for a couple of nights but, for me as an old fart, longer than that would be difficult.;)

My parents recently got a fantastic deal at The Regina off Expedia. The Regina is a bit more upmarket than a hostal, but they ended up paying something like €30 a night for 5 nights! So my recommendation would be to use a site like Expedia to see what offers they have going on 3/4/5 star hotels near the centre and just go with one of those. If you try to book directly with recommended hotels then you are going to miss out on the bargains.

Expedia is good, but also try these links:

Never noticed the noise but it was usually after 3am when we returned to the room - did hear the bomberos once. The price is about average for the area - can you get accommodation from £26 per person within 15 yards of Trafalgar Square? Mind you nobody will order you a taxi!!!

If you don't mind being out of the centre then there is this Travel Lodge (http://www.travelodge.co.uk/search_and_book/hotel_overview.php?hotel_id=271)Hotel near where I live. There's a direct bus route from outside the hotel to Sol and a metro station is ten minutes walk away. Either will take you about half an hour to get to the city centre. Nearby are about a dozen cafés and restaurants - nothing special, but not bad.

If what matters the most to you is a central location, there's this 2-star hotel near the main square and the Museo del Prado. Also, it's easy to reach from Atocha, if you're arriving by train. The hostels I know in the center are a bit expensive and still they are hostels so you can't expect much luxury. I prefer to pay a bit more and have some quality, but of course that's up to you. Here's the atocha train station hotel (http://www.h-plazamayor.com/atocha-train-station-hotel.html) website with extraordinarily detailed indications about how to get in, in case you're interested.

WE STAYED AT THE TRYP HOTEL IN MADRID. Its part of a chain hotel group that offers lower rates. I think the chain is Solmelia. Our hotel was located on Gran Villa, which is a major street.

I recommend Hostal Arco Iris. It's quite pretty and the price is reasonable. It's by the Retiro so it's central enough (though not as central as Sol would be) but without the Sol/Gran Vía noise.
