Hello! I just found the forums and podcasts and wow, I am in heaven! Well, if I were in Spain I'd be in heaven!

I am a US citizen spouse of a UK citizen, living in London. He suddenly got offered a position teaching maths at an English Montessori school in Madrid...and after not getting hired here for ages (doh thought there was a shortage of maths teachers?) he decided to take it for one term minimum Our son and I, however are staying here. To be able to apply for my permanent visa, I can't be outside the UK for XXX days before next March so if I went with him now I wouldn't be able to apply....I could reapply when reentering but would have to start my 3 years for citizenship over again (and I am almost there now....). If he wasn't paid so poorly and housing being so relatively expensive, we'd afford to move there but I don't think it is going to happen. He has a few weeks to figure it out or decide to come back as of the end of December. It's a sad thing, really--it has been my dream to live in Spain, I am studying Spanish like crazy.....and he is there (not speaking or understanding a word of Spanish), living my dream! He just got a flatshare near Embajadores station and is loving it...and I will visit Madrid for the first time in just a few weeks. I cannot wait!! If we could only find a flat within commuting distance of Aravaca for 500 Euro we'd be set...haha! (everything seems to be min 8 or 900!)
Thanks for this great forum!

Hang in there, where there is a will there is a way. I never thought me and my wife would figure it out and to some extent we're still working to make it all permanent. It's amazing what you can do when you really love something! Good luck

Hi Tracy, and welcome! Have you thought about looking for flats in the other direction from the center, i.e. taking the train further out from Aravaca? You wouldn't be in the center of Madrid, but you might find flat rents come down to the level you are looking for...

I will mention that to him as a possibility--he is hoping to further investigate our options this week after he is a bit more settled. I don't think we'd mind living a bit further out as long as we were near enough to the train station--we don't like to have to own cars! (Living in London has spoiled us for transport options!)

:) I will keep you posted!
