35-40 euros? Is that about right?

I'd say nearer €30-€35 though it depends on traffic. There'a an additional airport charge of €5 and the taxi drivers apply it to the meter when you arrive at your destination. It's really stupid because if you watch the meter you think you'll be charged a certain amount, then you see the taxi driver press a button and it jumps up by €5. I imagine loads of tourists must get the impression they are being ripped off, even before they've set foot in Madrid!

Taxi? I'd take the Metro for about 2€. But then again, I'm a poor funcionario. :(

I have been charges everything from €28 to €40 from airport to Santa cruz - I expect it depends how much of the Madrid ringroad you are treated to on the way. Maybe a taxi to Sol and a 50 yard walk up the hill might prove more cost effective....
Strangely on the way back I have never been charged more than €30

It's the one way system. To get to Santa Cruz the routing will have to be longer and up the c/Atocha. This will add extra to the journey.

Unfortunately, it built up my expectations as to what I might get in Madrid which, although in a great area, is extremely basic.

I'm sure this poor funcionario has other priorities, like CHORIZO!

I found this site - worldtaximeter.com in my PC magazine. Only covers major cities but Madrid is in there. As well as fares it has other useful info.
Barajas to Plaza santa cruz (http://www.worldtaximeter.com/madrid?to=la+moncloa&from=barajas&time=14-00&phone_booking=)
