Anyway, Participating on this forum... I am a big flamenco music fan. Both Traditional and Nuevo estilo. Flamenco and Classical Spanish was what made me interested in learning language and culture.
I also love chambao, cadencia, canto del loco and latin american groups such as Gotan Project, La 5º estacion, Juanes etc...and as you would see on my previous post, I am discovering some great Ketama tracks.
Este momento, me gusta mucha esta cancion:

Ale!
Is it common to witness flamencos singing or doing palmas in public in spain? Or is this scene pretty fictional rather than a reflection of the flamenco lifestyle?

I think I've posted on this before, the recent CD by Buika is absolutely brilliant. It's just been nominated for Album of the Year at the Latin Grammys, which if she wins is quite an achievement as the previous two winners have been Shakira and Juan Luis Guerra.
Here's the latest video off the CD, No Habrá Nadie en el Mundo:

Another interesting band from Galicia is the Killer Barbies. They sing in both English and Spanish. In this cover of Iggy Pop's "Candy", Silvia Superstar does some of the lyrics in Spanish.

In my opinion, one of the best songs ever writen in Spanish :
Antonio Vega - El Sitio de Mi Recreo (1992)
g1VoZV0KKrE
Silencio, brisa y cordura
dan aliento a mi locura,
hay nieve, hay fuego, hay deseo,
ahí donde me recreo.

Some bands I haven't seen in this post:
Skizoo
Algunos ejemplos:
Renuncia al sol (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jI3OStdDGtI)
Dame aire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JGgebq83Xo)
Incerteza (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMff44ZKhHc)
Algún día (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_UEfhcsNBI) <-bastante bonita, incluso si no te gusta el estilo
Mecano
Algunos ejemplos:
Mujer contra mujer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATMzgCbMjVs)
Cruz de navajas (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqBlIEMKPQ4)
Hijo de la Luna (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3REPMDSCh4)
Naturaleza muerta (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02Y9kOu18pc) <- Una de mis favoritas
Me cuesta tanto olvidarte (live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ml5YqmmfX4c)
Una rosa es una rosa (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuxit-nODmI)
Facto Delafé y las Flores Azules
Estilo: Trip Hop / Chill Out / Rap experimental. Bastante relajante.
Mar el poder del mar (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mf4GmiDFfUo)
Sólo palabras (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmyZeS5JQcY)
La Fuerza (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Moq90QsYSyI)
Enero en la playa (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4McNunPWFyo)
It's a pretty varied list, isn't it? I hope you enjoy it. If you like me to, I'll come back with more recommendations. BTW, don't be shy to point out my mistakes with the english language. I'm trying to get better on it.
PS: Hola a todos, por cierto. Un saludo.

Hola!
I'm Agata, I'm a newbie and my music taste is a bit eclectic as well ;)
Manu Chao, Ojos de Brujo, Orishas, Gotan Project... (almost) everybody knows it, so let's concentrate on another stuff.
Buena Vista Social Club.
A phenomenon in Latin music as a whole.
A compilation bringing together the legendary musicians.
A must have in your spanish (well, actually cuban) music collection.
Simplemente genial.
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=6JEdf7XsV5g
Muchachito Bombo Infierno.
Si os gusta la guitarra...
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=cN9jE3-LG0k&feature=related
(Btw, one day I'll pay the bills with my own guitar ;p
Yep, instead of becoming a bloody lawyer ;p).
Lhasa. (Also known as Lhasa de Sela).
And Lila Downs.
Singer-songwriters of the extraordinary voices and ethnic, folk, ezoteric music-styles.
http://www.last.fm/music/Lhasa
http://www.last.fm/music/Lila+Downs
Y ahora algo mas divertido...
Bebe.
http://www.last.fm/music/Bebe
Vale la pena escucharla tambien.
Machito.
My brother says it's a kind of music for our grandma... ;>
Anyway, Machito reminds me of my first salsa classes and makes me smile and move my hips from side to side even if I'm sitting down listening to it xD
http://www.nutsie.com/music/Machito
Everytime my spanish-speaking friends feel blue I keep on sending them this one...
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=5B3rG1CI4hQ
...'cause this funny little song makes me wanna hug the world ;-P
And finally...
here goes the BEST spanish song EVER.
Well, in my humble opinion at least.
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=k_QAPjtO2cA&feature=related
Devendra es la leche ;p
***
And that's all for now.
Hope it's been useful.
If not-hope it WILL be useful.
(Unfortunately I'm neither English nor Spanish, so feel free to correct me if needed.
Ah, and...
....saludos desde Gales para todos!
;) )

I'm not a big fan of traditional Spanish music, I tend to prefer pop music, and in Ronda we don't have a dedicated music shop, or a shop like Fnac, so we have to make do with HiperSol or do further afield.
Having said that, one of the most knowledgeable Flamenco fans I've ever met lives here in Ronda and is developing a webshop to sell Flamenco music.
On my iPod I have Chambao, La Oreja de Van Gogh, Monica Naranjo, Javier Estrada. I've ben finding simple pop songs and ballads are great for picking out words and helping me learn Spanish.

Any Spaniard who's more than 30 y.o. will more likely love 'RADIO FUTURA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_Futura)' a lendary rock ensemble that was born out of the 'movida madrileña' cultural outburst of the late 70's (the Spanish 'new wave') but survived the hype of that movement with a brilliant career throughout the 80's.
They are responsible for a large number of hits that are still remembered today : they evolved from a type of amateuresque synth-punk towards a more professionaly classic-rock with some jamaican and latin-american influences.
This is a performance on TV, 25 years ago of the song 'A Cara o Cruz' :

Has anyone on this thread mentioned Amaral, Pereza or Piratas? (Have not read all 14 pages of the thread).
Saw Amaral on TV whilst in Alicante a few years ago doing some acoustic stuff and thought that it sounded OK and was useful for learning more Spanish in a more fun kind of way. I believe that she has now also worked with Moby.
Does anyone know anything about the Piratas, was told that I should give them a listen by a Spanish friend, have one CD but know nothing about the band or their history. Anyone know anything about them?
Saludos

Another Spanish group that I like........
fb1GBnoMJ1k
Soy como tú estás, soy como te sientas,
soy Satanás, soy la Cenicienta.
Soy una bala, soy un tirano,
soy malo malo

If you're interested in catalan, euskera and galego (or english) I can add some more songs in the future and the modifications will reflect in your spotify too so, please, feel free to comment.

Y si empiezo a arder aprenderé a apagarme.

Like many have mentioned so far, I like Jarabe de Palo, El Canto del Loco, and La Oreja de Van Gogh in terms of Spanish artists. Lately I've also really been into Mexican music! Mostly pop stuff, but I'm also into classic mariachi music like Vicente Fernandez. Reggaeton is another favorite music type of mine, but not when it's exaggerated- then it just sounds tacky. Basically I love any type of spanish music that gets me moving!

I've been a fan of Nelly Furtado for some time now, but now she's singing in Spanish, I like her even more. Manos al aire from her album Mi Plan is one of my current favourites, and Te Busque, a duet with Colombian singer Juanes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juanes) is another that's well worth a listen. Here's a youtube video of the latter which shows the lyrics.

A really mellow, guitary strummy album that I have relaxed to on many an occasion is Eco, by Jorge Drexler (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?link_code=as2&path=ASIN/B0007QS3SI&tag=booksonspainc-20&camp=17%2089&creative=9325) - it's fairly easy to understand what he is saying too, despite the fact that he is from Uruguay :)
1st post everyone, hello..
"despite the fact he is from Uruguay", haha -- love that. I haven't looked for it yet in this forum, but for those who don't know, the double L in pronounced 'zh' in Uruguay & Argentina.
It can really throw you for a loop if you're used to the 'Y' double L sound in Spanish.
Cuarteto de Nos is probably Uruguay's most famous rock group.
Check out the following video -- they're quite comical to boot:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhDO11KarfM
Lot of that funky double L 'zh' in the video also..

There will be a new album of Sabina on November 17th and the first single is out already, Tiramisú de limón (http://www.elpais.com/videos/cultura/Tiramisu/limon/nuevo/Joaquin/Sabina/elpvidcul/20091103elpepucul_2/Ves/). Looking through this thread I see there are a few fans of Sabina , but my favourite song has to be 19 días y 500 noches (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odXqBrb6ctI) and here you can see the lyrics (http://letras.terra.com.br/joaquin-sabina/34773/)
I have always thought that the following sentence is superb:
"siempre tuvo la frente muy alta,
la lengua muy larga
y la falda muy corta."

Spotify users around here? Well, if you live in the EU and love music, you certainly should now about this wonderful piece of software. If you didn't hear about spotify you can google about it and get a lot of entries, but basically:

Here is a playlist I've made with a lot of Spanish music (http://open.spotify.com/user/ptm56/playlist/1TiDDHR8aKF3DrXpHrCE6m) <--
It goes from classical to metal music, and from the 60's to nowadays, so it's not really representative of my personal taste but a little collection of the wide musical tastes of the country. I'm sure everyone can find some interesting songs or bands, so give it a try. The playlist is quite extensive, so shuffling it it's a good idea to listen to mixed styles.
Of course, spotify give us the chance to click on the artist name while listening and get to a page with a short biography and the link to its discography (at least the discs available at this moment in the spotify database) and artists alike.

XXLI've limited the playlist to artists/bands from Spain, or having its career roots in Spain. I've also limited it to artists/bands singing in spanish. If you're interested in catalan, euskera and galego (or english) I can add some more songs in the future and the modifications will reflect in your spotify too so, please, feel free to comment.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that some of the records in the list would be labeled with this in "some countries" -> http://www.poster.net/parental-advisory/parental-advisory-parental-advisory-4900114_cl.jpg
Un saludo.
PS: If anyone wants an invitation I have 5 available. Ask by pm.
Having just got spotify for the ipod I'm going to try some of the recommendations. It's a lot easier when you get led by the nose.
So far I've found out those guys and gal from La Oreja de Van Gogh really know what a melody is.

How about some more tips on your favourite Spanish music?
I was in Madrid a few weeks back and took the chance to head over to the FNAC store (http://www.fnac.es (http://www.fnac.es/)) and stock up. Purchases included "Techari" the latest album from Ojos de Brujos. Other favourites include Jarabe De Palo and a top play on my Ipod for some time - "Pafuera Telaranas" by Bebe.
On Ben's recommendation (see http://www.notesfromspain.com/category/books/music/ (http://www.notesfromspain.com/forums/../category/books/music/)) I have just bought "Luzia" by Paco de Lucia on ITunes. Definitely a thumbs up.
My favourite at the moment is an artist called "NEK" i also listen to sting and i think nek is influenced by him by the sound and style of his albums. great music you should check him out.

I have so many favourite songs that I can add! The one I am thinking about now is Mediterraneo by Joan Manuel Serrat. You may know it, if not, listen to it. You may find it in youtube, it belongs to the 70s.
I will keep adding more songs as they come to my mind!...

I have been listening to a lot of Spanish music, much of it recommended here.
I particularly like the late Merecedes Sosa including Gracias a mi Vida.
I have posted under learning spanish a link to the video mag veinte mundos
http://www.veintemundos.com/en/
From this month they are going to include a singer each month. this month there is an article about Violeta Parra including Gracias a mi Vida and a link to a 2010 recording of the song which appears to be a charity song for the Chilean earthquake recorded by a group of artists.

Has anyone heard of María Dolores Pradera not mentioned as far as I can tell on this thread? She sings lovely melodies and nearly every song has a charming acoustic guitar backing. I don't care if she's regarded as naff in Spain these days, I like her songs and the words are as clear as you could wish for. I found her by clicking around on Spotify.

Funny you mention her now. A couple of weekends ago I went up to Santander driving to see my mother and I forgot to take any music to listen in the car. On the way back, the only thing I could find in my mother's house was a doble CD of Maria Dolores Pradera. She was very, very popular in the 1970's. I had not heard her for a while, and I was amazed as how clear one can understand her and as you say, the songs have nice melodies. She has sung in the last few years some songs of Carlos Cano (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdaChGT4ZFg) and she has performed with Sabina (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irQ15cKVA5I) . The charming acoustic guitar backing was for a long time performed by Los Gemelos, twin brothers, one an architect, also proffesor in the University of Madrid and the other an engineer. One of them has already died. They played Spanish guitar, rather than acoustic. You can see them in the video of Carlos Cano.
This summer, Maria Dolores Pradera, at the tender age of 87 gave a concert in San Lorenzo de El Escorial. (I didn't go to it)
Limeña, Amarraditos, La flor de la Canela, Fina estampa, are some of the most popular songs she sang (still sings!)
