Not everyone's cup of tea, but an English teacher friend of mine once told me that a great way of getting to grips with past tenses was to read Obituaries (http://www.elmundo.es/elmundo/2006/09/18/obituarios/1158564470.html)!

I don't think you could get much more morbid but from reading it, it does seem a good way to distinguish when the imperfect is used and when the preterite is used.

I suppose in the same sense news stories would be useful too since they're always written after the event has happened, but with more reflection towards the present and the future than obituaries have.

That's a better use for obituaries than what we use them for in New York City ......to find vacant apartments!
