Unnecessary costs to passenger = extra income to airline. Cynics might say that's why they do it...

I spoke to the easyJet
manager in Barcelona last year and this is one of the areas we discussed. It is perceived that the scrummage method is better at ensuring that all passengers are at the gate on time (thus allowing a quick turnaround) rather than the allocated seats method where passengers amble about and go shopping, not too bothered when they pitch up at the gate.
