Los obreros lo construyeron ('lo' refers to the building, 'el edificio')

[ Los obreros construyéronlo.
This form is not incorrect, but it's not used in spoken language. Maybe when recite a poem ]

Another examples:
El primo de Maria llevó un libro a la abuela

El primo de María llevó un libro a la abuela de Marcos
______________+----------+ +------------------+
________________direct obj_____ indirect obj.

El primo de María lo llevó (al libro) a la abuela de Marcos
El primo de María se lo llevó (a ella) (al libro)

About 'lo' after the verb. In addition to what Urgellenk told us, we use 'lo' after the verb in imperative sentences:
"¡Dimelo!"
"Llevala de paseo"
"Piénsalo bien"
Or in all other cases (conjugated forms), but just as I said, they are not used in spoken language. They are used in poems, and especially those who belong to Romanticismo español...
