Wow, they even have their own wikipedia entry:

Quote:
"The Ketchup Song" is the English title of the song "Aserejé" which was an international hit in 2002. The song exists in two versions, Spanish and English, with the latter performed in a mixture of English and Spanish, described as "Spanglish".

The song describes someone asking a DJ to play the 1979 rap hit "Rapper's Delight" by Sugarhill Gang, but they can't remember what the song is called. So the person sings the chorus, which being in English confuses the Spanish DJ. The chorus is the chorus of Rapper's Delight, "translated" phonetically into Spanish (written the way it would sound to someone who does not understand English):

I said a hip hop the hippie the hippie
Aserejé ja de jé de jebe
to the hip hip hop, a you don't stop
tu de jebere sebiunouva

the rock it to the bang bang boogie say up jumped the boogie
majabi an de bugui
to the rhythm of the boogie, the beat
an de buididipí

I thought the song was vaguely familiar, though I never heard the Ketchup version. I think they are prettier than the Sugar Hill Gang.

Well, I never knew that about the Sugarhill Gang song being the inspiration for this! The sad thing is, I actually feel better knowing this fact, as the song always confused the hell out of me, so now I can at least see "some" logic in it! jeje

PS. Ben, you're watching way too much YouTube, you know! You're going a bit YouTube crazy lately!

There's also a flamenco version by Diego Carrasco from Jerez. No YouTube link not surprisingly, but you can hear the whole song here using RealAudio. Scroll down and click on track 2 Aserejé.

The flamenco purists would probably hate it, but I like it.

I can´t believe it's been more than four years now since 'Aserejé'.

The song was a joke, easily forgotten, but now it brings so many memories of a great summer : agüita del mar andaluz, fiestas en la playa, cubatas y muy poco descanso.

Summer of 2002 was special to me, and the sticky chorus of Aserejé remains as one of the songs in the soundtrack of that time.

Sadly, my memories of a terrific holiday in Granada in 1999 are inextricably linked with Lou Bega's Mambo No 5, which seemed to be playing in nearly every bar while I was there .

Just last week my husband and I were listening to a CD I bought in Summer 2001 - my first in Madrid. It was before "Asereje" but it does have the many hits of that year, including "Yo Quiero Bailar," Raul's "Prohibida," David Civera's "Dile que la quiero," and everyone's favorite "Mayonesa!" Everytime I hear those songs I'm immediately transported to a summer night in Madrid. They say that sounds and smells inspire some of the strongest memories.

As for "Asereje," I was shocked when I went to Oktoberfest in Munich in fall of '02 and saw everyone go crazy when that song came on!

Reminds me of the smash hit from the summer of '89, oh so long ago....

The Refrescos, with "Vaya Vaya aquí no hay playa." Yet another silly summer song, but we all thought it was the coolest thing ever.

Warning- you might see typical Spanish beach scenes....

Probably, Mr. Smarty-Pants.

I suppose that most of these summer hit people are one-hit wonders, such as Los Del Rio.

Not sure why I would want a paso doble, but if you read my post, you might have even seen the smilies, that would have been a clue as to the seriousness of my post.

Sorry, I didn't mean for it to come out so hard. I didn't intend for my response to be so serious or critical.
