¿Hay mucha cultura vegetariana en tu país? ¿Es fácil encontrar restaurantes con opciones vegetarianas en el menú en la zona donde vives?

Some Mexican pals learned pretty early to say "do you have anything on the menu that doesn't walk, swim or fly" whilst in Spain to avoid the habitual response of "well, we've got lots of seafood, fish etc."

The Parador chain came up trumps on this one though. When we asked if they had anything on the menu for veggies the manager said "Of course, even vegetarians have to eat" - they had a menu of at least 20 items some suitable for Vegans.

Sí, en Holanda somos bastante acostumbrados al vegetarianismo, y no es muy difícil encontrar platos vegetarianos en los restaurantes. También conozco a mucha gente que se llaman 'vegetarianos' aunque comen pescado.

Los supermercados te ofrecen revistas mensuales gratuitos con recetas, y todos tienen una sección vegetariana. Además hay mucha gente que come platos vegetarianos de vez en cuando - yo, por ejemplo, como algo vegetariano dos veces en la semana. Tengo un 'día de la pasta' semanal y también es uno de mis días vegetarianos (pasta con verduras y queso pero sin carne = menos calorías).

La variedad de recetas vegetarianas no es muy grande en Holanda porque la cocina holandesa es bastante monótona en sí, y prefiero buscar recetas en la red donde puedes encontrar un montón de sugerencias. A mí me encantan los 'quiches' vegetarianos, hechos con hojaldre.

Desafortunadamente, tanto en Eslovaquia como en toda la Europa Central se come mucha carne. Es simplemente una tradición y temo que durará largo tiempo hasta que vegetarianos consiguen un status normal.

Es verdad que en los menús de la mayoría de restaurantes figura por lo menos un plato sin carne/pescado (ordinariamente son queso frito o el plato nacional intraducible al español) pero la gente que rechaza carne completamente sigue ser considerada un poco extraña, sobre todo en el campo.

Estoy muy triste por haber oído en el podcast que en España la situación es aún peor. Soy vegetariano, y tampoco como huevos, cebolla y ajo, pues parece que va a ser muy difícil sobrevivir allí si un día lograré venir

Pero no quiero desesperarme. Quizá las circunstancias mejoren. Ya veremos.

Hi,

I have been a little occupied and only now listened to this podcast. I found it very interesting and one that i definitely could relate to. I am 'Celiaca' which basically means I can't eat anything that has gluten, e.g. wheat. So finding places in Spain where I could actually eat is a daily challenge. So i definitely know the stress of tryin to eat out in Spain. For those of you planning to visit spain, you should definitely check out the FACE (Federacion de asociaciones de celiacos de españa) website.

Aqui en Los Angeles se que hay muchas personas vegetarianas y tambien se que hay muchas restaurantes que tienen opciones vegetarianas.

Me alegro mucho al saber que yo pueda ser *vegetariana* en espana si solo como pescado o mariscos.

Hola I'm also Celiaca and now i know the spanish for it! thanks so much!

We shop a lot in Mercadona supermarket and many of their products are marked "sin gluten" if that helps you. They have more than 1000 branches around Spain.
I have a friend who has a wheat allergy and she has all sorts of trouble getting substitutes. When we arrived about 6 months after her, we used to bring back things from trips into Alicante or Valencia to see if they were suitable.

This place is fantastic. They have a big store next to the cafe which sells lots of healthy stuff. The cafe is very relaxing and has a salad bar and other snacks and drinks. The restaurant is also fantastic - I had an awesome risotto there. Definitely a place to visit if you're a vegetarian in Madrid!

¡si tan solo fuera tan fácil donde vivo aquí en los estados unidos! digo, supongo que dependería de donde vives porque cada estado es diferente tal como cada ciudad, pero de todas maneras creo que la mayoría de los eeuu no es un amigo de los vegeterianos. yo misma era vegeteriana por más o menos 7 años pero recientemente volví a comer un poco de carne de vez en cuando porque pasé el semestre pasado estudiando en san josé costa rica y casi me moría de hambre y/o una falta de proteína porque excepto huevos y frijoles, realmente no había otra fuente de proteína y después de pasar muy poco tiempo allá, empecé a estar mareada.

cuando se trata de españa, no me pareció tan malo como latinoamérica o alemania, pero tuve unas dificultades cuando salíamos para comer en algun restaurante o en la calle.

pero claro que yo era una de esas vegetarianas que no comía nada de pescado ni casi nada de huevos, y cuando se trata de lo que uno está dispuesto a comer, pues, eso cambia todo. por lo general pienso que los que SÍ están dispuestos a comer un poco de pescado y huevo tienen mucha más suerte que los que no lo están..
