Default Tenía tanto- socorro!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvQJUGn1TQg

Hi, I've tried a translation I know it's riddled with errors but please take a look;

Prometo guardarte en el fondo de mi corazón
prometo acordarme siempre de aquel raro diciembre
prometo encender en tu día especial una vela
y soplarla por ti , prometo no olvidarlo nunca.

I promise to keep you in the fountain of my heart, I promise to remember always those funny/strange decembers. I promise to light on your special day a candle and blow it for you, I promise not to forget it ever.

Tenía tanto que darte tantas cosas que contarte
tenía tanto amor guardado para ti ,
tenía tanto que darte tantas cosas que contarte
tenía tanto amor guardado para ti.

I used to have so much to give you, so many things to tell you (why is the que there I don't get how 'que' pops up all the time in spanish has anyone a tip) I used to have so much love kept for you.

Camino despacio pensando volver hacia atrás
no puedo en la vida las cosas suceden no más
aún pregunto que parte de tu destino se quedo conmigo
pregunto que parte se quedó por el camino.

I walk slowly thinking to return I used to have behind???? I can't in life the things they happen no more, although I ask that part of your destiny its left with me, I ask that part is left by the road.

I used to have so much at times I curse my luck, somtimes my bad luck doesn't follow you?

Tenía tanto que darte tantas cosas que contarte
tenía tanto amor guardado para ti ,
tenía tanto que darte tantas cosas que contarte
tenía tanto amor guardado para ti.

I have very little time now, but this sentence is something like:

I had so much that sometimes I curse my luck,
sometimes I curse it for not still being with you.

I walk slowly thinking of going back
I can't. Things in life just happen
I am still asking which part of your destiny was left with me
I ask which part was left on the road
.

I used to have = solía tener

Que.- good question. I shall think about it.

Many thanks Pippa you are a saint!

I've gone through it all again, and I have 3 queries;

1. Volver hacia atras= return towards back- (of going back) I thought Ir + hacia = to go back?
2. se quedo conmigo- was left with me
. se quedó- was left..... on the road

Why are these both in different tenses? first one present, second one preterit, however both still translate as "was left"?

3."Prometo encender en tu dia especial una vela" "I promise to light a candle on your special day" I get why it's this, but I just don't get why/ how in your head you can skip all the words in the middle, then juggle them around, then process them to come out so that the end is in the middle?

Say for instance, a spanish ship is sinking, the captain is shouting out instructions to passengers over the tannoy system. For some reason you don't hear the end of the announcement are you all doomed? because if you don't remember to put the end bit in the middle the sentence doesn't make sense..... i.e I mean in time constrained situations does it still work, the word order of sentences throws me completely.
