What is laísmo?
Consiste en utilizar los pronombres femeninos de complemento directo la y las, en lugar de los propios de complemento indirecto le y les. Es mas frecuente en singular y se produce sobre todo cuando el complemento se refiere a personas:
In English : Laísmo is the use of feminine direct object pronouns la and las, in place of the correct indirect object pronouns le and les. It is more frequent in the singular and above all when the pronoun refers to people.

Regalé un libro a María :
Le regalé un libro (correcto) : La regalé un libro (incorrecto)
Curé la pata a la gatita
Le curé la pata (correct) : La curé la pata (incorrect)

Similar expressions commonly used in speech though incorrect
misuse of (le, les) in place of (lo, la, los, las) [leísmo]
misuse of (lo, los) instead of (le, les) [loísmo]

Someone has just provided an answer...
Ben had said that el caldo is a type of sopa. Marina said la odio, and so was referring to la sopa and not el caldo.
All makes sense now...
