Llevar contains 5 letters, but 6 characters. ll is a digraph, meaning in this case that it is composed of two instances of the character l but is considered as a single, inseparable unit. Think of characters as being the textual shapes on your screen that the cursor skips over one at a time each time you hit the left or right arrow key. Think of a letter as being a member of the alphabet, which, according to the RAE, includes the digraphs ch and ll (but not rr).
