You can register with the Spanish authorities to get an NIE, and indeed must before you can purchase a house for example.
If you get into paying taxes you also register with the Hacienda, or tax office.
Your DNI will remain your passport.

NIE - see here
All resident and non-resident foreigners with financial affairs in Spain - regardless of whether they are EU citizens or from a non-EU country - must have a foreigners tax identification number or NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero). This is the equivalent of a Spaniards Número de Identificación Fiscal (NIF) which serves as a fiscal identification number.

DNI (Documento Nacional de Identidad) es como una clave unica manejada por algunos paises para la identificacion personal.

NIF (Numero de Identificacion Fiscal) es otra clave de identificacion pero para asuntos tributarios para personas fisicas.

And the CIF is the Código de identificación fiscal, for businesses.

In other words, your passport is probably none of the above. You might might able to tell them that your passport number is equivalent to your DNI in your country, and that might be sufficient. If not it looks like you'll have to get yourself a NIE.

Bad guess - it's a DNI. See post 2 in thread.
