In a few minutes will be held the traditional christmas-lottery draw, which has been one of Spain's biggest tradition for the last number of decades and its known as 'El Gordo de Navidad' (the big one).
It is a lottery draw in the traditional manner, there are up to 69.000 different numbers (each number divided in many fractions) and all numers have their own little ball. More than 13.000 winning numbers will be draw from a huge spinning whell containing al 69.000 litlle balls, and they will be matched against another whell of numbers that tell the prize. The total amount of prizes sums up more than 2.100 million euro. All numbers and prices are 'sung' by children from a Madrid Scholl (San Ildefonso) which have been months preparing for the traditional music in which they have to shout the numbers and prices. This is, as I said, one of Spains biggest traditions. Everyone, even the onees that don´t like betting, has at least one ticket, which is also a common gift for friends, employees, etc... If you have the opportunity to tune in any Spanish radio station, do it now (all will be broadcasting the event) and listen for a few minutes (the draw lasts for hours) the exitement and tradition involved in this. Every Spaniard has been raised with the repetitive melody of the children singing the numbers and prizes. More info, pictures and update http://www.elmundo.es/elmundo/2006/1...8&t=1166772556

I just learned that the lottery prize of this year makes the year 197 (almost two centuries!!! it began un 1809, talk about tradition!!).
There are 2.142 million euros in prizes, more than 13.000 winning numbers and more than 24.000.000 winning tickets. All in all the world's oldest and biggest lottery prize.

The big one, the 'Gordo', has already been picked, and is being shared between ticket holders in Vitoria, Alicante, Benidorm, Onil (Alicante), Fuenlabrada (Madrid), Santiponce (Sevilla), Almazán (Soria) and Valencia - with the lion's share going to Soria. I have a video of it that is currently being processed on youtube. As soon as it is ready, I'll post it here!

Thanks for providing this clip. I've often wondered what the Gordo draw looked and sounded like. Its good that they keep this traditional ceremony going.
A refreshing contrast to the flashy but sterile extravangza of the UK national lottery draw. Last edited by Jules; 22nd December 2006 at 04:52 PM. Reason: Didn't finish my sentence |
