![]() I was stuffing myself with pistacho nuts earlier, thinking, "I've always had a thing for these". That and the huge olive oil fried patatas fritas/crisps (potato chips for those of you from the US) you get in Spain in giant bags or free with your beer. Can't resist them. If I open a packet at home they've gone in minutes, so I just don't buy them any more ![]() What are your biggest vices? Last edited by Ben; 25th June 2008 at 04:13 PM. |

Morros de cerdo, like pork scratchings, but just the noses. 4 € fo a strawberry punnet sized box, which I can eat in an evening. Also a certain soft sweet licorice that seems to be only obtainable outside Madrid. I have searched everywhere and can't find it. So, a rare treat.

Croissants, with a coffee of course. One without the other seems like a waste.

Tried all shapes, sizes, fillings etc but they all make me wince! My wife ends up having to eat them all.I'll certainly join you in a manzanilla though, as I'll pass on the churros! |

Interesting that so far everyone is listing food. No gamblers or cigar smokers out there??
Because I don't do either, I'll stick with food also - I would walk through the desert for a Reese's Peanut Butter cup or Ben & Jerry's Phish Food. |

The other issue is that what I think is hot doesnt line up with the Iberian scale of curry hotness... I find myself being warned all the time that a particular dish is very very hot when in fact it is quite pleasant. Cant imagine Faal goung down too well in spain. Can you order a very hot chicken korma or a mild vindaloo? Does dopiaza offer options with or without onions? If you are served ribena can you have it without blackcurrants? I have eaten a couple of reasonable curries on the Costa in restaurants in Brit dominated areas and run by ex-pat Brit Indians. (They seem to adjust the spiciness to the native language of the customer! ) But I have yet to find a good Brit-level curry in any Western country outside the UK.[Curry was also a way of getting my own back on some Spanish friends who tricked me into eating extremely hot chillies with some tapas, telling me it was a local delicacy. In revenge, I took them to an Indian restaurant in Madrid and ordered for them! Being a kind person, I ordered birianis only for my friends, yet they were still mopping their brows and drinking litres of water! ![]() ![]() ]

You want me to list my biggest vices in just one thread?
OK, here are the major culprits, Chorizo, sobrasada, lomo embuachdo, jamon serrano/iberico, morcilla, solomillo, churros con chocolate, same olive oil chips Ben mentioned, calamares a la romana, pan de campo, ensaimadas, NY pizza, peruvian rottisserie chicken and fried plantains, movies, video games, home theater products, Drakes coconut cookies (only available in NY), pernil asado, cafe espresso or latte, vino tinto, beers and I'll stop here.

Gary, I took Ben and Marina to the best Indian in Madrid a while back, and they both loved it.
Happy to arrange a NFS Madrid Curry night if enough people are interested. Honestly, this place will blow you away. ![]() Dean |
