Marina's parents have had to take serious measures to fortify their house recently, all because of a rising tide of violent burgluries. Add to that express kidnapping and Spain may have a serious problem on it's hands!

Bandits from Kosovo in the mountains of Spain? Mind-boggling, isn't it? So the police is no longer in charge here... a worrying trend, don't you think? I wonder why it isn't possible to round up these gangs and deport its members to their countries of origin. I also agree with you that we shouldn't tar all immigrants from these regions with the same brush just because some of them happen to be involved in organized crime. Excellent podcast, by the way!

Latest attack not far from Denía was on a lady in her garden. Thieves attacked her and took her jewellery whilst her husband was in the chalet.
More worrying have been a series of attacks on chalets around Valencia where they spray ether (commercially available believe it or not!) in to bedrooms to anaesthetise people before robbing them. The police do catch lots of them but I fear there are plenty more around Europe and South America queueing up to partake of the rich pickings in villa land. I wonder how much the fragmentation of Spanish police into national & local helps the villains? Maybe they collaborate more than we see. It was also announced this week that there are now more private security personnel than police in Spain so it's not just the thieves getting rich. Further south from here there have been several "Neighbourhood Watch" schemes set up along the lines of those in England. They are not vigilantes but merely observe their own neighbourhoods, produce contact lists and advise the police of suspicious or anti-social activity. Initially there were complaints from the Spanish inhabitants about these but I believe they are being won over. I belonged to one in England that had regular meetings, attended by the local police, with regular newsletters about crime in the area, preventative measures etc. Plus we had a good party every now and then! I'd have thought the Spaniards, with their strong sense of community as shown by fiestas & church activity, would have welcomed such moves. |

Here in the States, many neighborhoods have been taken back by the Neighborhood Watch programs.
