Tremendous Castellers Video from Tarragona

Casteller from Mike Randolph on Vimeo.

In the city of Tarragona, Spain, castellers gather every two years to see who can build the highest, most intricate human castles. It requires astonishing strength, finesse, and balance. Not to mention courage.

Thanks so much to Mike for sending me this video. I went to this event, the Concurs de Castells, about 10 years ago (and wrote about it in Errant), and have longed to go back since, it’s one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen in my life. If you want to go in two years time, get a ticket as soon as they are released, they fly!

  1. This reads as if the concurs is the only opportunity to see castels, whereas I know you know that isn’t the case, Ben…

During the spring and summer months, collas de castels perform regularly in their own barrios and at festa majors throughout Cataluña, and smaller competitions are held regularly during the season, particularly in Valls and Granollers. Collas will also often invite other groups to their annual “Dia de castells” and hold unofficial competitions too.

There are plenty of opportunities to see attempts at the fabled 4d9f (quatre de nou amb folre) – not just every two years!

  2. I love and hate watching these, even on the TV news here. When the pipes start up I begin to get so nervous. And if it’s a real wobbler….aaaaagh.

  3. El País now has an English edition you can read online [if you are struggling with the Spanish one] and the editor has flagged this article as a good read. thought you would like to know Ben
