Tragaperras = slot machine

Being a dog-lover I was quite horrified and puzzled in equal measure when I came across this word: what kind of monstrosity would swallow bitches, I wondered. That's until I came to know, to my relief, that perra also means 'coin'.

There used to be two kinds of perras: perras gordas, coins of 10 céntimos of peseta and perra chica, coins of 5 céntimos. I think I read once they were called like that because they had a lioness on the coin that looked like a dog, or something like that. Not sure when they stopped being used, but certainly before 1970's. I remember the 50 centimos coins, they were called 'dos reales' - presumably because un real was 25 céntimos. These were stopped around 1980.

Your explanation is correct, according to http://www.papelymoneda.com.ar/5-centimos-espana-perra-chica/.

But the lion doesn't look like a dog to me.
