Default Segovia

I'm getting ready to spend 4 months in Segovia for my study abroad semester (September 7 until Dec 27th). The school has some long weekend trips planned for us, and we have a couple weeks of break in the middle of the semester.

Suggestions/ideas of places I should definitely see in Segovia & nearby area?
Any must-sees around the country for the weeks I have vacation?

La Granja (quite nearby) - lovely gardens. I visited in winter so couldn't visit the palace. The gardens were fantastic in winter - all snowy and some of the fountains were heavily froze.

Salamanca - marvel at the colour of the stone in the plaza mayor, visit the 2 cathedrals (one built to support the other after an earthquake), visit the Casa Lis (Art Deco/Art Nouveau museum), visit the convent of Las Due˝as (very peaceful and has an unusual cloister - 5-sided and irregular shape) - though I suspect you'll have your fill of churches and convents, etc

┴vila - go and see Santa Teresa's finger (ooh lovely). There's also an interesting convent (you knew I was going to say that) with 3 cloisters, one of which houses an oriental museum. Try the Yemas de ┴vila (o yemas de santa teresa) - they're sickly sweet yum!

Have a great time!

Hi Kate,

Segovia is a great place to be. It's quite central so you won't have any problem to get to visit other places in Spain.

Near Segovia I recommned:
  • Pedraza, lovely medieval town full of restaurants with wood ovens where they cook delicious Lamb and Pork. It's worth the visit but avoid weekends as it gets packed.
  • Sepulveda, less beautiful but more authentic than Pedraza, great restaurants serving the same kind of food. Don't miss a walk through the hoces del Rio de Duraton y la Ermita de San Frutos for breath taking views like this one
  • Note that Segovia gets very cold in the winter
