Hey, great and timely podcast. I have been playing with facebook and it does seem to have greater facility than other social networking groups. The age profile is still skewed towards younger people but not entirely teenagers, as you point out.

I think I understood nearly all that you said without the transcript but I have kind of lost the plot on the packaged transcripts - will this feature in a future box set?

I have invited Marina to be a friend, not entirely from a wish to socialise via net but more so as not to look totally sad when my 40% of my friendship group comprise my children! I think I will be soliciting madly until my numbers come up to something respectable!!

One question though - I haven't yet got the point of 'poking' - but maybe its an age thing

cheers

Alan

Answering my own questions - have now seen your news sheet - thanks - so understand packaging of transcripts...... and on 'poking'

I got this explanation but am I still missing something .....

Pokes

A poke is a way to interact with your friends on Facebook. When we created the poke, we thought it would be cool to have a feature without any specific purpose. People interpret the poke in many different ways, and we encourage you to come up with your own meanings.

What happens when I poke someone?

When you poke someone, a poke icon will appear on his or her Home page with the option to "Remove Poke" or "Poke Back."

Why won't it let me poke anymore?

You have been temporarily blocked from poking because you exceeded a Facebook limit that is based on the speed and quantity of use. These blocks prevent spammers from abusing the message and poke features.Your privileges will be restored within a few hours.

I hid a poke. Is there any way to get it back?

Once a poke is hidden, it's gone forever. The memories, however, will last a lifetime. Oh, and hiding a poke allows the other person to poke you again, which is always a good thing.

Thanks for the return of the Intermediate podcasts! Yeeaaa!!
About Facebook. I have indeed subscribed to Facebook, but admit I haven't spent too much time on it yet, so I am not very good at finding out about its many facets. I already visit a lot of web sites daily and Notes in Spanish, Notes From Spain and Notes from Madrid (hint, hint) take up the majority of my on-line time.
It's interesting what you said about businesses banning the use of Facebook by their employees. I have an employee who is addicted to My Space and have had to put the lid on his use of the computer to some extent.
Keep up the good work - I look forward to the advanced podcasts as well. And I look forward to purchasing the worksheets.

Me gust'o tu podcast mucho, interasante.

Great, we're really pleased that the phrase of the day app is going down well, as we put a lot of time into it! Hopefully we will have other ways of making the phrases available soon.

Yipeee! Ya soy miembro de Facebook! Que divertido es! Pero muy enganchador!!! (Ésta es palabra?) Pues, sabéis lo que quiero decir. No se nos deja usar en mi trabajo. Menos mal!Ya tengo que probar Frase del día!
Me alegré de encontrar a mi madre allí. Ella era la unica de mis contactos de mi correo electónico que ya era miembro de Facebook. Entonces, no es solo para los jóvenes!

Wow! Do you think rejecting the billion from Yahoo is a worthwhile gamble?

If he's happy (the Facebook founder), then yes, it was a good decision to turn down the billions.

A billion is stiil a billion. That could help buy a lot of happiness. Someone else might come along with a better version and get the 7 billion he's currently holding out for.

I figured a while back that I was reaching my limit for the number of logins and memberships (and all that it entails with passwords etc) so I was going to give Facebook a swerve, but this podcast has tickled my interest and the phrase of the day is something that's right up my street, so I've just this minute signed up to an account. (I'm now waiting for an email confirmation so I can actually access the account!).

I'm a bit gutted now that I've snubbed a load of emails in the past from genuine friends who've "invited" me to join. Now I'm going to have to find them all and beg forgiveness! jeje

Hope to see some of you in there soon. Feel free to add me once I get the account fully sorted. I've no idea how you "find" people yet, but I'll soon be an expert given that I'm in my final week of work in my old company with no intention of doing much!

Selling fake Rolex on the beach . Nah, everything's gone belly-up for me in the last few weeks. My employer has told me that I have to return to work in the UK. I immediately refused and 10 minutes later, I handed my notice in, and I'm serving my notice period as we speak.

The flat I was living in has been sold so I've had to move too, but that's gone great and I've been in my new place for just over a week, and it's perfect, so that's one major worry sorted.

I've been doing a few interviews during August for jobs in my field, which is difficult when most of the city is on holiday, but progress has been good and the general reaction has been positive. I'll hopefully know more by the end of the week on this as there are a couple of irons in the fire that are looking promising, but if not, then once we're in September and people return to work, things should really start moving (I hope!).

So, in a nutshell, the honeymoon is well and truly over. I always knew I had it relatively easy and it was possible that it could all go a bit gooey, but even though it's now happened, I'm actually OK about it given that I've been wanting to leave my company for a while now but always needed a push. Now I've got one hell of a push..... out the door! jeje

So long as I get sorted in the next few weeks, I'll be fine. Any more, and there'll be a collection tin rattling around the forum! jeje

Thanks for an interesting podcast Marina & Ben - nice to have them back.

I always thought I was too old for Facebook (late 40s), but when my daughter recently spent 6 months in Mexico teaching & then travelling it was absolutely brilliant. We were able to keep in contact and see how she was doing...expecially reassuring for my wife. Equally we got to see some great photos from Chichen Itza, Tasco, San Cristobal etc. Coupling that with being able to chat on Skype, the world does seem to be getting smaller.

Now my daughter is back, I can see how much time people spend on Facebook with messages, uploading photos etc. I can understand why some firms have banned its use at work.

The local 6th Form College where I did AS Spanish last year also has banned it from the school servers...too much traffic I suppose.

Another factor that I hadn't realised is how little my daughter and her friends use ordinary email these days. They use Facebook to chat direct to their friends via the site. Don't know if that will impact on Microsoft's future revenues.
