Default Acceptance in Barcelona

Someone told me that the people aren't very accepting in Barcelona if you do not know Catalan is this true? Thanks!

There was a similar thread on here about the same subject not so long ago but basically my experience is that I lived in Barcelona for two years and never had any problems in this respect. Obviously if you can learn a few snatches of Catalan then this will help endear you more to the locals but overall, don't worry.

There are also several videos on YouTube that set out to debunk that myth.

Yes, this can be true. When I and my family went to Costa Brava we experienced this. We were speaking Spanish in a predominantly Catalan speaking area often they would ignore us or answer back in Catalan, even though they could speak Spanish. I did notice that if we spoke in English we would be treated better.

I’m sure not all people from Barcelona are like this.

I think it's highly recommendable to know a few phrases of the local language, no matter where you're going. Catalan speakers recognise that their language is a minority language, so for them if you went out of your way to learn the basics it would really help you to get better service with more patience or help from the locals. After all, language is culture, so if you've taken the time to learn some of their language they take it to mean you must respect their culture at a deeper level.

I haven't been to Barcelona, but I have spent a decent amount of time on the coast in Valencia and my experience is that most people have no problem speaking to you in Spanish, especially if you try your hand at communicating in Catalan first.

Yes, you will have no problems in Barcelona city itself, and in almost 4 years here I've had maybe 1 incidence of someone not changing to Castellano when it becomes clear that I cannot speak Catalan (although I can understand enough now to get along).

Also bear in mind that the people here are bi-lingual for the most part, and will switch between the two depending on who they are talking too and also maybe even what mood they are in. In my group of friends there are people from here who do not really speak Catalan but it does not impact them being part of the group conversation in any way.

Quite the opposite at one point - a local in Raval accused Steve W and I of being part of Woody Allens film crew and preventing her from eating lunch because her favourite fish n chip shop was closed due to filming. We declined to part with a Euro for one of her 'works of art' and she left most disgruntled!!
