I didn't get to stop but I passed through San Sabastian and it looks really neat. I have always wanted to go back and check it out.

Personally, as you know, I prefer San Sab, but you may find 2 days there enough. One idea could be to use one of the three days you are based in San Sab to make a day trip to Bilbao to see the Guggenheim, and then finish up with one day in Santander later.

I'm guessing you're not JUST staying in these two cities? Good.

I live in Salamanca. You don't NEED two days in Salamanca. If you want a beach holiday, San Seb wins (obviously). But I'd let the day trips sway you. Avila and Segovia are both day trips from Salamanca, while, as Ben says, San Seb as Bilbao.

My opinion is:
2 days for San Sebastian and the basque coast, 1 day for Salamanca and 1 day for a trip to Segovia from Salamanca.

Are you going to Madrid too? In this case you can make a day trip to Avila from Salamanca (99 kilometers) and other day trip to Segovia from Madrid (87 kilometers).

San Sebastian is a wonderful city and June is an ideal month to visit Northern Spain. Here is a terrific article published in 2001 in Travel & Leisure which really sums up San Sebastian perfectly

Aside from the Bilbao daytrip, you can also visit Hondarribia which is on the border with France, only about 10 miles east of San Sebastian. This is another marvellous town with a charming medieval quarter and a picturesque fishermans quarter with great restaurants and bars. I also recommend the fishing village Getaria which is roughly 16 miles west of San Sebastian. In June you´ll be able to enjoy bbq fish right by the harbour while you watch the colourful fishing boats swaying.

About Salamanca, this is another fine city but different. I think you know this. If I had to choose I´d pick San Sebastian and if you plan to drive up there from Madrid, then you might like to take a slight detour on the way, through the Rioja Wine region which will be very beautiful in June.

Have a great trip.

Ken
