Default The obstacle race called 'learning Spanish'

What a great idea, Ben!

The best quote found so far: don't get frustrated about being a perpetual intermediate.

This must be the sequel to 'breaking out of beginner's Spanish'.

Default just speak spanish with a italian accent

Hi everyone, first sorry this is in english I've just got back from a fantastic holiday in Rome with my spanish sister in law A and her sister B, I'm exhausted and the little grey cells are having problems getting around any language. None of us speaks italian but A said ''don't worry we can just speak spanish with an italian accent'' With sweet smiles and lots of laughter we managed pretty well until there was a problem with A's camera. She asked the hotel staff in spanish if there was a camera shop in the road outside the hotel because she thought her camera was broken. Immediately hotel maintenance was in our room checking the windows we eventually managed to persuade them to go as we had not complained about the room. Phew, and went out to explore Rome. When we returned we discovered that new shutters had been fitted to the windows- maybe A's philosophy was flawed as 'tienda' does not mean shop in italian but 'shutter' I think. My red faced apology in english was understood perfectly. Conclusion - when in rome don't make up the lingo, speak english and let the natives answer in whatever language they like. Keep the spanish for spain and spanish friends and relatives. It was hilarious and I enjoyed every minute even though my head was in a spin most of the time. Looking through your Spanish Forum has help bring me back down to earth - Thanks Ben,
Carolita

In the Amazing Spanish Learning Ideas someone has suggested watching TVE Internacional and using subtitles from page 888 of Teletext. I've tried the subtitles both through page 888 and the Sky digibox from time to time, more in hope than expectation. I've never got any subtitles to appear. Is it just the odd movie that has these subtitles?
