I could not get into the forum this evening at around 17.50CET. The pages were not loading, but I did not get a server error.

Yes, me too, and I was fuming! They said:

Hello,

This issue wasn't caused by your server. There was an issue with our name servers being down temporarily.

Regards,
Jason

If the lookup was slow, it would just be slow once because once you're given the IP of Ben's server, the result is usually cached. If the forum is generally slow it's probably not a DNS issue. If you get an 'Address Not Found' (firefox) kind of error and the page doesn't load, that's more of a DNS problem.

I don't get that explanation either.

If their name server(s) were down, then that should not affect the rest of the world because we are getting the IP from the DNS lookup at our own providers.

It would affect sending out mails from the forum (eg. "you have a new private message..."), because their mail server would not be able to do a DNS lookup unless it could bypass their DNS relay.

UNLESS
(a) they use using some form of reverse lookup to send the IP packets back to the clients rather than just responding to the IP address
or
(b) they don't really mean the name servers, but instead the name allocation tables (NAT) on their own gateways to know where to send the IP packets in their server farm

But in both cases, this should also affect the NFS blog in the same way. If it didn't, then I would go back to my suspicions about the SQL database being the root cause.

It is all baffling. And I suspect sometimes their answers are just designed to keep the customer quiet as much as a reflection on reality! Let's see how it performs this week.

Just read this again after switch quoted it:

I don't think that that is actually entirely true. DNS resolution is a hierarchical process with the IP address for a given host within a given domain being provided by the authoritative name server for that domain.

Whilst it is true that when a client makes a name resolution request to the user's service provider's name server that server may return a response directly from its resolver cache, it will at some stage still have to query the authoritative DNS server for the domain in question. This will happen if it is the first request that that provider's DNS server has received for the particular host, or if the elapsed time since the record was cached exceeds the TTL (time to live) specified in the domain's zone file.

Thumbs up

Just an update for Ben - the boards have been fantastic since you moved to the new server. I suspect your visitor numbers will improve too - there's many a time I looked here, but encountered difficulties in moving through the forum and so gave up.
