Spain had 7 shots on target, USA none (apart from the 2 goals). Spain were fielding a top team - only Iniesta missing.

Absolutely - although only Ramos' mother would say he was a top player tonight.

Reminds me of this:

What are the prospects? Are there a couple more new fans?

A few more than that, given the level of soccer activity in American youth.

A well deserved win! Spain looked lack-lustre while the USA looked and played well, even though they were obviously tiring quickly at the end!

I agree that more kids are playing soccer; however, it seems to me that it doesn't translate to interest as adults and tv viewership. I don't know why that is.

Vested interest of tv companies in baseball, basketball and gridiron, perhaps?

American football, basketball and baseball are easier sports to find advertising slots in due to their many natural breaks, time-outs etc. So the big TV companies obviously prefer them for this reason.

The Spanish players came from having played more competitions in their respective leagues but that has not been excuse to lose, it has been a shame for Spain and the Spanish football to lose before USA.
Congratulation to the selection of USA.

Default Congrats US soccer team!!

Accidents do happen in football, that is why this is the most exciting and important sport in the world.

But there can be no excuse when you lose and your last reserve is way better that the first opponent player (all due respecto to the US soccer team).

No matter if our players had a very tough season and were thinking more about the holidays that about this pretty much unkownw tournament, if two of our better players were injured (Iniesta and Silva), if Spain had an excess of confidence and were thinking already about the final, if they shot on target many more times than the US.

There is no excuse, Spain lost the game, we have to congratulate the US for this great achievement, and move on. Let this be a cure of humility. We cannot go on playing thinking we are the best team in the world and that is gonna be enough for us to win.

I think we are, but we have to show it on the pitch against all rivals.

Let's set out feet back on the ground again because next year in South Africa we have to be mentally fit to win the World cup.

Apparently Jozy Altidore playing for USA OFF-ence played the ball with his foot and the spain DE-fence goalminder could not stop it. Touchdown USA.
Dempsey (who rushed an amazing 11,000 yds in the game) also scored using his foot.

I didn't see the game but I heard the US defense described as "an inpenetrable wall".

Yes it was.

I don´t know how many shoots were made by Spain but US defenders blocked them all, it was fustrating to have the ball all the time to make whole US team retreat in their box and achieve nothing. The first 30 minutes of the second half was a constant attacking monologue by Spain as I watched the game I thought the goal was a matter of time. It seemed imposible for Spain not to score. The best attacking side there is (Torres and Villa) did not make a good match and the US defence was superb.

Sometimes football gives you this kind of surprises, and top ranked Spain (35 games unbeaten with 33 victories) loses against a brave US side, whose best player (Altidore who scored the first goal) sits in the bench in a Second Division Spanish Club (Xerez) and barely has the chance of playing a few minutes sometimes.

Well deserved USA, good luck against Brazil.

Not quite! Spain were able to take far more shots at goal, but USA scored from substantially less shots.
