To be boring and return to the original title of the thread - how do you pronounce "Vuelve"? Following the rules I would have pronounced both Vs as Bs, but so often I hear it pronounced "Bwel-vey", although the second v is very soft, which seems inconsistant!

I understand what you have heard to be substantially correct. There appears to be a lot more subtlety in much Spanish pronunciation that is a bit too complex for non-native speakers. So this link gives an extremely complex discussion of the subject (and I get the feeling it seems to contradict itself). Only read this if you are ready for a good mental (and vocal) work-out! ! ![]() ![]() http://www.champs-elysees.com/produc..._phonetics.htm |

Thank you for that. So, it's just the laziness of the lips that make the second v a, er, v. In fact I enjoyed that so much I could even subscribe to Champs Elysees, except the Saudi postal service(?) seems to have a knack of making CDs vanish.

My take on spanish v's +b's try and say them all like v's but just using the lips, the teeth should not contact the lips at all,and you end up with something in between. Using this technique vuelve por ejemplo does just seem to have a stronger sound for the first v than the second which is simply easier to make less strong with the surrounding letters. i.e it just happens for particular words, that a b or v will change in intensity due to the surrounding letters.
