Default Deslizar?

Hola,

I don't know how many here are familiar with the Mexican band Motel. On there new album, 17, their new single is "Y Te Vas". The lyrics start out this way:

"Y te vas
deslizando en la oportunidad
de dividir el tiempo para escapar
la distancia es una eternidad"

I'm not quite sure what the phrases "deslizar en la oportunidad" or "dividir el tiempo" mean to say. I get the general idea, I think, but the phrases have me a little lost.

Are these common expressions in Mexico? and what do they mean?

Default Yo, en fin, soy ese espiritu

Que tal,

I think is not any 'common mexican expression', but only an intent to frame in a metaphorical and poetic way sentiments and feelings.

You can translate to English the phrases on you have doubts and ...

deslizar en la opurtinad -> to slide in the opportunity
dividir el tiempo > to divide the time

and I suppose the doubts still remains. As well as me.

Trying to do poetical locution not ever has meaning, evocative and handsome consequences.

Do you get the sense from this verses of a famed poet ?.

Espiritu sin nombre
indefinible esencia
yo vivo con la vida
sin formas de la idea.

Yo nado en el vacío
del sol tiemblo en la hoguera
palpito entre las sombras
y floto con las nieblas.
...
Yo río en los alcores
susurro en la alta hierba
suspiro en la onda pura
y lloro en la hoja seca.
...
Yo soy el invisible
anillo que sujeta
el mundo de la forma
al mundo de la idea.

Yo, en fin, soy ese espiritu
desconocida esencia
perfume misterioso
de que es vaso el poeta.

I see what you mean and the poem does make sense to mean, but I suppose what is so puzzling to me about this phrase "deslizar en la oportunidad" is that I can interpret it in so many ways:
  • to encounter/run into/enter in the opportunity
  • to delay (sliding around?) in the opportunity
  • taking advantage of the opportunity(???)
I'm not really sure what he's trying to say, or what his intent is. Thank you though

to encounter/run into/enter in the opportunity

A free, and maybe wrong, interpretation.
To avoid the suffering that brings to me a particular situation,
my love for you is not reciprocal, by example, I let separation and
time to do their labour,to palliate my pain.

There are a couple of traditional sentences about this.

El tiempo y la ausencia (o la distancia) todo lo curan.
No hay mal que 100 años dure.

They didn't know radioactivity in those times.

Well, the original lyrics you posted above are rather poetic if you ask me, and probably make as much basic sense as some of Bob Dylan's more obscure offerings (though his of course do make total sense and put the world in it's rightful place!)

However, these guys have got a little bit too arty for my liking.

I don't see any other way of translating it than something random like:

"There you go,
slipping and sliding on an opportunity
to divide your time and make an escape,
distance is an eternity"

But....

"deslizando en la oportunidad de dividir el tiempo para escapar" put more simply could just mean 'taking your chance to make an escape"

I definitely will not be making a career of translating song lyrics. Anyone else care to have a go?

Thanks a lot Ben. I do think that that would really fit with the song, and I had never thought of if that way. This group actually seems to do this a lot, where they use phrases that don't always come together to make any sense. Pero, con el tiempo, I do eventually get some of. others are just harder than others I guess.

Thanks again Ben.

Here is the full song lyrics if that helps with context:
Y te vas,
deslizando en la oportunidad,
para escapar
A veces siento que la vida
es una cosa que nos deja
nos aleja, nos refleja
y nos avienta sin mas
hay tantas veces que
quisiera protegerte
y de repente
simplemente lentamente volteas
y te vas
deslizando en la oportunidad
de dividir al tiempo para
escapar, la distancia
es una eternidad y no te
puedes detener a esperar
puedo decirte tantas cosas que
quisiera me dijeras
me pidieras me pudieras
prometer algo mas
pero el silencio de mis labios
es el precio que te debo
pues te quiero y
no te quiero dejarte
y te vas
deslizando en la oportunidad
de dividir al tiempo para
escapar, la distancia
es una eternidad y no te
puedes detener a esperar
para esperar
entiendo que todo sucedió
a veces no creo en el adiós
pudiera decirte
que me voy
pudiera decirte
a donde voy y hoy
y te vas
deslizando en la oportunidad
de dividir al tiempo para
escapar, la distancia
es una eternidad y no te
puedes detener a esperar
déjame llevarte una
vez mas y
desde lejos junto a ti
caminar la distancia es una
nada mas
y para siempre
yo te voy a esperar.
