Default Imperfecto subjuntivo

1.
En inglés.. "If I was sick I would go to the doctor"..
En español.. "Si estuviera enfermo iría a el medico"..

2.
En inglés.. "If you had money, you would give it to me".
En español.. "Si tuvieras dinero me lo darías"

3.
En inglés.. "If I was Mexican, this would be easy"..
En español.. "Si yo fuera mexicano, esta seriá facil"

Es correcto?

Gracias,

Duncan.

Well, I don't know about the Spanish, but I would say "If I were Mexican, this would be easy..."

Si es verdad.. :-) aunque tal vez un poco mas formal.

Creo que más personas dirían "if I was".. por lo menos en Australia :-) Nuestro inglés no es muy bueno.. Es los condenados (the convicts) culpa.

Yes, the Spanish sentences are correct. One small change I'd make...use "esto" instead of "esta" in that last sentence. (Si yo fuera mexicano, esto sería fácil.)

Regarding the English sentence, there was a time when that phrase "If I was Mexican..." would have been considered grammatically incorrect English, but it's one of those things that, little by little, has crept into standard usage.

To me, it sounds better to say "If I were Mexican...", (to drive home the point that I'm talking about something that isn't true, something that is hypothetical, etc.), but it's quite common to hear native English speakers say "was" instead of "were" in that kind of construction.

It's the last dying gasp of the English subjunctive. Now you see why the Spanish subjunctive is so freakin' hard for us!
