Well first off all this is for the more nerdy inclined folks....

Not just with this model but other intel boxes that have been "hackentoshed" you are looking at the beauty of mac software and saving considerable amount of money. Again this would be for the more technically inclined.

Would saving anywhere between $500-$1,500 be resonable motivation?

I hear you but owning a Mac is not about the money, its about the ritual unboxing and the sheer pleasure of owning a pieve of kit that is so beautiful and yet so functional.

Then the logic board fails. Or the home button on the iPhone becomes really unresponsive and you take it back for the 3rd time.

Their iPods are worth the money IMO, I'm not sure about the rest of their stuff, it seems to be getting really pricey.

Nobody said they were perfect

Apple doesnt manufacture logic boards and all computers have these failures - we had one fail on a PowerBook some years ago - it was collected, repaired and returned within the week.

Over the 20 years we have run Macs I have had failures of a hard drive, an optical drive, a power supply and a cracked LCD screen, some manufacturing issues and some accidental damage. The manufacturing issued were sorted by Apple and the accidental damage was claimed on household insurance

You took it back twice too many - demand a new one

Hehe, nor did I. And that's exactly the point. Some Mac users love to brag how wonderful they are, but they are not perfect. They still use components from manufacturers like everyone else. I actually like Macs (especially the iMac) and OSX - I just won't shell out the cash for one.
