Easy, easy..... whether valves or tubes what you have to remember is that there are blues musicians present on the forum.

Us bluesers get all excited with all that valve technology and it's bad for our health to get us all excited.

Favourite valves - GZ34 and 12au7.

My box of death is actually an old suitcase in the garage - any amount of old electronics in there. The valves, though, I keep in the house ;-)

Now if were talking valves here's the man... This is Pete Hartley. He is a legend and I am proud to say a friend. He builds Hartley Thompson guitar amps, he made and sold synths to Cabaret Voltaire and the Human League as well as building the first drum kit for the Def Leopard drummer after losing an arm (the drummer not Pete). He repairs kit for many top bands and does mods to Marshall amps that make them amazing. He built my poweramp - the only Hartley Thompson poweramp in the world!!!

Back in the 80s I met Mat Mathias designer of the famous Matamp later branded as Orange amps.

Now we have all seen examples of the famous Orange amps - played by numerous legends.

I heard that Mat provided some amps at a good deal for struggling up-and-coming blues band Fleetwood Mac. When the band reached huge global success they sent a taxi to Huddersfield to take Mat to Manchester Airport, then a first class ticket to L.A. and a 5* hotel where Mat was the guest of the band.

Nice story!

I believe that they are still making Matamp in Meltham. Who'd have thought that the borders of W. and S. Yorkshire would be a centre for valve amps.

I´m cheating really - it's for microwave frequencies. I used to work with one (10 KW klystron) that was water cooled and had 17 KVA on one end, an interesting combination of things went a bit wrong with the plumbing

Looks more like it was used to power a certain machine in a certain Woody Allen movie.
