One of the best things about the best blogs is that they send you away to other interesting places, something I’ve been forgetting of late. So here we go, a couple of interesting finds:
Did you know that the Nazis exterminated thousands of Spaniards during World War Two? I didn’t:
“At the end of the Spanish Civil War half a million of the losing Republicans fled across the Pyrenees to France. They hoped for refuge. They didn’t get it.”
Richard Morely has the full, fascinating story.
Meanwhile, in politics…
South of Watford points out that “the espionage scandal that is now almost inevitably being referred to as “Aguirregate” continues to attract attention.” Lets hope it attracts a full investigation!
And on the environmental front…
“…it is hideous, environmentally calamatous and a sin.” What is it? Find out here.
And finally, one of our own:
Our friend Isabel is still hanging out in the Spanish section of our forum helping all-comers with their written Spanish. Make the most of this chance to improve your Spanish, please!
Links that have nothing to do with Spain:
My friend Jackie has a brand new blog, and asks if Twitter is Twaddle (I’m still on the fence about that one – do leave her a comment!)
If you’ve ever wanted to write a book (or complete any long term creative project), read this.

That is why we have newspapers and magazines. Ben, you are just too wrapped up in all this digital tomfoolery…

Of course, he lived (and printed) just down the road from us…
… and by co-incidence, there will be a large biker camp there this spring: http://www.hubraum2009.de/
How about that for linking two NFS topics?

Guttenberg invented the printing press (with movable type) to allow the disemination of news and information. It was hailed as a great step forward. Now we have the internet, which is Gutenberg to the power of infinity(!). So another step forward. Some people obviously think the Gutenberg’s idea is good enough! Talk about living in the past, poor souls.

With all this so called modern technology can someone explain why there are allways errors or spelling mistakes in the newpapers, magazines, and books? This rarely happened years ago . i guess that the publishers dont have spell check.

“Did you know that the Nazis exterminated thousands of Spaniards during World War Two?”
My grandfather’s brother ended up inside a nazi prisoner camp; he fled to France when the Spanish Civil War ended (he was an anarchist), and joined la résistance during the German occupation. Fortunately, he managed to survive until the end of the war, and was rescued by American soldiers.
But you know what? After defending France against the nazis, and after suffering for years in that camp, they didn’t want to give him the French nationality and intended to deport him back to Spain… So he fled again, to Switzerland.

@Kralizec – great and of course terrifying story. It’s hard to imagine how much harder life was then.

RE Nazi extermination of Spaniards during World War II: yes, I knew about it, there was a story about this in El País last year.
